In 2023, the HASI Foundation was proud to support the HBCU Energy Leadership Pathway, a program spearheaded by E4 Carolinas in collaboration with SEI that aims to foster career development in the energy sector for students from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Carolinas. This initiative brings together a diverse group of energy companies and educational institutions, driven by the goal of increasing the number of students pursuing energy industry careers.
Central to the Pathway’s success is SEI’s development of a culturally relevant and distinctive curriculum tailored for the program. This curriculum is designed to complement a four-year undergraduate program, offering students a blend of training, credentials, and practical work experience through internships. The comprehensive approach ensures that participants are well-prepared for successful careers in the energy industry upon graduation.
With support from the HASI Foundation, E4 Carolinas and SEI have achieved significant milestones in the program’s second year. This includes developing and deploying all Year Two learning modules for the 25 participants, providing stipends to support participating students financially, and organizing two competition events. These competitions allow student teams to tackle real-world energy challenges, fostering problem-solving skills and innovation. The impact of the HBCU Energy Leadership Pathway extends beyond individual career development. By providing education, practical experience, and financial support, the program is paving the way for a new generation of energy leaders from HBCUs, helping to build a more inclusive and diverse workforce in the energy sector.
